Hugh O. Overby, III
February 6, 1932 – September 17, 2012.
Hugh O. Overby, III passed away at his home in Crossville , Tennessee on September 17, 2012. He had resided there for almost three years, to be near to family members who assisted in his care in recent years. He was born February 6, 1932 in rural Stewart County, Georgia, as the eldest child of the late Hugh O. Overby, Jr. and the late Maggie Sapp Overby. Known to his friends as “Buster”, he attended local public schools and played basketball for Richland High School. He later went into farming with his father, which remained his lifetime vocation. He lived and worked on the family farm located in the Storeplace Community of Stewart County, Georgia for most of his life. He was an avid gardener, outdoorsman, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of country living to include telling stories about life on the farm in years past.
He married the late Marilyn Jean Tidd in 1958. Together, they had a family of five children, each of whom survive him. They are Charles Frederick Overby, of Stewart County, Georgia; Wanda Gayle Wilson (Charlie) of Crossville, Tennessee; William Clark Overby of Eastman, Georgia; Tammy Jean Kimbrell (Casey) of Mershon, Georgia; and Tom Barge Overby (Stefanie) of Crossville, Tennessee . He was affectionately known as “Papa” to his twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who also survive him. He is further survived by two sisters Lucia Overby Farley of Quannah, Texas and Margaret Ann Overby of Crossville, Tennessee and a brother, William Gustin Overby, of Blue Ridge, Georgia.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The family appreciates the expression of sympathy and condolences of family and friends. A private interment at the family farm in Stewart County, Georgia is planned for a future date.
