John S. Davis, aged 84, passed away on July 19, 2024, in Crossville, TN. Born on February 14, 1940, in Richmond, Indiana, John was known for his outgoing and generous spirit. After his graduation from high school (Hagerstown, IN), John attended Ball State University, graduating with a Business and Marketing degree. He worked in sales at many different businesses throughout his career, with an entrepreneurial eye for new ventures. He retired from the company he founded, Eagle Industries, in 2010.
He deeply cherished his family and friends, and was famous for traveling hundreds of miles to attend his children’s and grandchildren’s celebrations and events.
John was known for his mechanical aptitude, and could repair or construct nearly anything and often came up with new and innovative ways to solve problems.
Following college, John proudly served as an Air Force pilot, flying C-124 cargo planes during the Vietnam War. He continued his passion for flying throughout his life, with his proudest achievement as a founding member of the American Sonex Association in Crossville, TN. For many years, he would organize a fly-in of Sonex enthusiasts at the local airport – with attendees flying in from all over the country. During the weekend, Sonex builders learned new skills, took demo rides, met fellow builders– all under John’s tireless organization and generosity. He often gave of his time and expertise, to help fellow Sonex members get their airplanes built, inspected and into the air.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis Davis; sister, Judy Rose; son, Scott Davis (Beth); daughters, Diane Zink (Dennis) and Brenda Younker (Dave); seven grandchildren: Emma Zink, Caitlin Sloan (Steve), Maggie Svitana (Jeremy), Michael Younker, Hannah Younker, Drew Younker, Bailey Tollett (Ben); and six great grandchildren: Claire, Owen and Lila Svitana, Tessa Holbrook, and Oliver and Eloise Sloan. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Stanley and Doris Davis, and a sister, Ruth Ann Davis-Marsh.
A private interment will be held at the request of the family. Details of a celebration of life will be shared with family and friends when appropriate.
