Radcliffe C. Ted Varney, formerly of Yarmouth, ME, was born July 2, 1931, the son of Harry D. and Phyllis Varney. He attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of the Korean War and served four years. He attended the University of Maine, receiving a degree in business administration. He also graduated from the American Institute of Baking. Mr. Varney was employed by John J. Nissen Baking Company of New England. In 1994, after 38 years in management positions, he retired and moved to Crossville.
He was married to the former Nancy Chenevert for a period of 38 years until their divorce. He is survived by his wife, Janet Soncrant Varney; daughter, Sarah E. Varney of Rye, NY, two sons, John D. Varney of Florida and Charles J. Varney of Minnesota; granddaughter and grandson, Elinor and Matthew Vizard of Rye, NY; stepson, Kevin Soncrant and wife Raquel of Las Vegas, NV; stepdaughter, Stacy Fromholz; and grandsons, Hunter and Spencer of Indiana.
Mr. Varney was a watercolorist, whose favorite paintings were landscapes. He restored antique furniture and loved to attend auctions.
