Gordon William Hamby

Gordon Hamby, 82, of Crossville passed away at home, peacefully and surrounded by his family on August 13, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Gordon, who was affectionately nicknamed ‘Gus’ by his many siblings, was born to Richard Samuel and Anna Lou B Hamby on October 7, 1939, and raised in the Slate Springs and Fox Creek area. He was the fourth child born of twelve. At age 16, after the passing of his father, Gordon, the oldest son living at home, moved to California with his mom and younger siblings. It was there that he met his wife of 60 years, JoBeth Taunton Hamby. They have three daughters who love and adore him. Gordon was a kind and generous man who never put himself before anyone. He was known for his great and witty sense of humor and his love/hate relationship with politics. He provided a nice life for his family by working hard and always being there to love and support them. Gordon and JoBeth moved back to Crossville in 1988, and in 2002, he retired from the Cumberland County Justice Department. Gordon enjoyed gardening, traveling to see his grandkids, and working in his wood shop where he built amazing furniture by memory and with no instructions. He also enjoyed driving down to Fox Creek and Slate Springs and reminiscing about his childhood and sharing fond memories of the great times he had growing up. Oftentimes he could be found working in his yard in the early hours of the morning as he loved being outside and staying busy. Throughout his illness he wanted to go home, and we believe he is finally home where he has regained his ability to walk, hear, and remember. He is the first man we ever loved, and he will forever be missed. In heaven, he is reunited with his parents, four sisters, two brothers, and many other family members.

Gordon is survived by his wife JoBeth, daughters; Sherri Wright (David), Kelly Kofford, and Leah Bateman (Jon), seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers, and three sisters.

There will be a graveside service on Friday, August 19 at 2:00 at Slate Springs Cemetery on Genesis Road, Crossville. If you feel compelled, in lieu of flowers, please make a monetary donation to your local Alzheimer’s Association. The family would also like to extend gratitude to Hospice of Cumberland County for their diligence, support, and the great care they provided.
