Joe Glenn Cross

Joe Glenn Cross, age 77 of Crossville TN, went to be with the Lord on July 2nd 2020. He was married to his beautiful bride, Janet Cross, for 58 years and had five wonderful children together!

Joe was quite the man. He honorably served in the US Army and proudly ranked as an E-5 soldier. His family and his country greatly appreciate his service during the Vietnam War. He was always a man of carpentry, from memories his children had of him cutting down trees all over their property to even building their family home. Before residing in Crossville TN, Joe and his family lived in Chicago Illinois and was the Owner/Operator of an auto body repair shop of twenty years, Owner/Operator of a taxi cab service of ten years, and a driver for the public transit CTA Bus of ten years. Admiration is the word to describe Joe G. Cross from his wife to his children to their family friends. “We love you, we miss you, and we are proud to call you husband and dad.”

Joe was survived by: wife, Janet Cross; children, Jennie McCluskey (Patrick), Robin Cross, Amanda Bagley (Robert), Erin Lane, and Johnny Cross; 11 Grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; Sisters, Faye Milner and Anne Dickerson; and brother, Elmer Lee Cross.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John Nathan Cross and Jessie Lee Rushing.

Thomas Rodgers (Rodger) Wilhoit

Thomas Rodgers (Rodger) Wilhoit age 82, of Crossville, Tennessee joined the love of his life, Ruby Jean (Lee) Wilhoit and the Lord July 1, 2020.

He was born July 17, 1937 in Greeneville, TN to the late Lessie Clyde and Mary “Elsie” (Ruble) Wilhoit. He was a very talented musician who played Country/Honkytonk music with his Band of Gold and recorded albums “Band of Gold” and “The Social World of Rodger Wilhoit.” The band even fronted for well-known artists of that time such as George (Jones) and Tammy (Wynette).  He also won awards for his music and voice. In his later years he played mandolin in Bluegrass groups “The Sounds of Grass” and “Cumberland Mountain Boys.”

A member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, he was a kind, caring and generous man who loved all he met. He loved music, animals, traveling and working in his wood-working shop building birdhouses. He also enjoyed fishing, RV-ing and just sitting on his porch or by the fire with his (unofficial) adopted daughter Carla drinking cowboy coffee and talking about nothing and everything.

Rodger is survived by a daughter, Kim Wilhoit; Step- sons Roger Lee and Keith (Petra) Scarberry;  brother John Wilhoit; sister Diane (Ronald) Smith and many beloved grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind dear friend and neighbor Carla Cox, longtime friends Darwin and Vicky Scarlett, his Church family and his Bluegrass family along with many friends he loved dearly. He also leaves behind his constant companion, his cat Tom-Tom (Thomas).

He was preceded in death by his parents Lessie Clyde and Mary “Elsie” (Ruble) Wilhoit; wife Ruby Jean (Lee) Wilhoit; sisters Wanda Rader and Marilyn Pence; brothers William and Mac Wilhoit; and step-daughter Susan Thomas.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 3, 2020 at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home 2653 N. Main St. Crossville, TN 38555 with visitation from 5PM to 7PM, services following at 7PM.

James Lymen Coon

James Lymen Coon, age 81, was born on August 11, 1938 to the late Ira and Alice Leary Coon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and passed away at his home in Crossville, TN on June 30, 2020.

He was a barber for over 50 years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Phoenix, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Cory and family, and sister, Lorraine Spencer.

Joyce Ann Tasch

Funeral services for Joyce Ann Tasch, age 74, of Crossville, TN, will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at 5:00 PM. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. She is survived by her husband, Robert Tasch; daughter, Michelle Netherton; three grandchildren, one great grandchild; and siblings, Danny Pigg, Tim Nash, Patsy Padgett, and Nancy Zambell.

Savannah Ayres

Savannah Ayres, age 78, was born on April 21, 1942 to Frank Miller and Alice Barnwell in Crossville, TN and passed away on June 15, 2020 with her grandson Steven Moore, Jr. and daughter Phyllis Van Order by her side.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Girdley) Van Order; grandchildren, Steven Moore, Jr., Jessica (VanMiddlesworth) Watson (Nate), Warren VanMiddlesworth (Michelle), Randy Turley, Craig Turley, Rachelle Turley, Stacey Van Order and Phillip Van Order; great grandchildren, Steven Moore III, Kensington, Anndolyn, Ellinette VanMiddlesworth, Brinley and Matthew Watson; sisters, Mary (Miller) Limburg (Robert) and Lola Miller; nephew, George Michael Neal; step children, Kelly (Ayres) Bodell (Chris) and Christine (Ayres) Kellay (James); special friends, Mary and Bill Cress, Joanne Love, and Annie Dagle and her companion poodle, Gloria.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale Ayres; daughter, Kathy (Girdley) Turley; and siblings, George, Ernest, and Robert Miller, and Marie, Beulah, and Bernice.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 11 to 1 at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services for Savannah will also be held on Saturday following visitation. She will be laid to rest in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

Savannah spent a large portion of her life in Battle Creek, Michigan and a memorial/celebration of life will be held there at a later date to be determined. 

Linda Carol Hardin

Linda Carol Hardin, 77, was born on December 19, 1942 in Chattanooga, TN to James Melvin and Geraldine Talley Smith. She passed away on June 14, 2020.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Martin (Wade), David Hanna (Joyce), Rick Haburne (Vee), and Lindsay Hardin; grandchildren, Chris, Jennie, Joseph, John, Daniel, and Dustin; and brothers, Charles Lawson and James Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Frank Carney; and daughter, Melinda Maples.

Family will receive friends on Friday, June 19, 2020 from 3:00 to 4:00 at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service for Linda will also be held on Friday following visitation with Father Jim Harvey officiating. The burial will be in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

James J. Lintz

James J. Lintz was born on May 7, 1938 in Durand, Michigan. He passed away on June 10, 2020. James worked for General Motors and retired with 32 years of service. He moved to Fairfield Glade, TN in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Lintz; daughter, Kim (Chris) Bonomo; son, Steven (Melissa) Lintz; five grandchildren, Braxton (Samantha) Lintz, Spencer (Paige) Bonomo, Gariella Bonomo, Bianca Lintz, and Nika Bonomo; two great grandchildren, Ryker and Savannah Lintz; brother, Jack (Penny) Lintz; and sister-in-law, Dianne Gage and Bruce Tite.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Louvia Lintz.

James served in the Army National Guard. He was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Memorial services for James will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Broxine Marie “Nellie” Weatherford

Broxine Marie Weatherford, “Nellie,” was born on September 4, 1948 in Stewart County, TN to James Lester Weatherford and Vestie Elizabeth Jones Weatherford. She passed away on June 7, 2020 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. She is survived by one brother, Paul Shelby and wife, Joycean, and two nieces, Shirley Shelby Rice and Lisa Shelby Hart, and special friend, Thelma Ann Eldridge and her family. She also leaves behind a host of special friends at Hilltoppers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Kelly, brother, John William Shelby, nephew, William Roy Shelby, and special friends, Clifton Smith, Louise Ford, and Carmen Hamilton. Nellie was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church.

Nellie came to Hilltoppers as a resident at the Parker Home in November 1994. The following May she moved in to a family based home with Thelma Ann Eldridge and Louise Ford. She resided at that home until April 2013 when her health declined, and she required the care of nurses.

Nellie was very easy going, and everybody that met her loved her. She was very kind to everyone she met and always remembered their name. She enjoyed reading and was very proud of her ability to read. She would read aloud and if she saw you were impressed by her ability, she continued to get louder and louder. She would also do the same with her singing, which was not always a good thing, but she thought she was the best. She said she was going to perform on the Grand Ole Opry. She beamed with confidence. She was extremely proud of her pretty blue eyes. She loved new clothes, and if you told her that her clothes looked nice, she would agree with you and say they brought out the blue in her eyes. She once said all the girls are jealous of me. She was also very complimentary to everyone else no matter what the case. Nellie was a great person with a big heart and will be sadly missed by all.

Funeral services for Nellie will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 2:00 with Michael Lowery officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 – 2:00. She will be laid to rest in Fairview (Red Top) Cemetery in Indian Mound, TN on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 12:00.

Leamon Lloyd Hawn

On May 30th, 2020, Leamon Lloyd Hawn passed away at the age of 84. He died peacefully in the presence of his immediate family from cancer in Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville, TN, where he and his wife, Nola, have resided for 60 years. Leamon lived his long and memorable life with purpose and integrity. He was a energetic and accomplished man that never stopped moving. He mowed his lawn and cared for his much loved pets, Faith his dog and Tom Cat (kitty), all the way up to two weeks prior to his passing which he truly enjoyed. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend to many, and he will be greatly missed by everyone.

Leamon is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Luina Hawn, brothers, John, Jesse and Dangle,  sisters, Callie and Ruth and son Ricky Leamon Hawn.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nola Faye Matthews Hawn; daughter, Rita Delvin (Don), sons, Michael Hawn Sr., Mark Hawn Sr. (Stacey); 17 grandchildren, and 35 great grandchildren.

He was a very accomplished man. He became a master craftsman owning his own business, L & M Cabinet Shop. Leamon could fix or repair almost anything. Having only an eighth grade education, he was a very intelligent man greatly exceeding his school education. He enjoyed acquiring knowledge on a daily basis and was always excited the learn new things.

Leamon proudly served in the Army, 101st Airborne Division, for three years in which he was honorably discharged.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 5, 2020, at Crossville Memorial Funeral Home from 12 to 3 with service to follow at 3. Bro. Wayne Matthews will be officiating and burial will be in Rinnie Cemetery. The pallbearers are the grandchildren, Joey, Zack, Ryan, Michael Jr., Leamon, Jerry, AJ, Austin, TJ, Steven and Lee.
